David Gillanders
Davids obsession with photography developed in his early teens whilst training as a boxer in Glasgow.
In the late 1990's, he won a couple of local photographic competitions with his black and white documentary street scenes of Glasgow life. He then began working for leading magazines and newspapers.
He currently undertakes social and humanitarian projects around the world, covering topical issues, which he feels passionately about.
In Gillanders earlier work, he looks at different environmental problems in the streets of Glasgow. This creates a theme for his photos which look at poverty, crime and drugs. There is a current theme in all of his projects which is the use of black and white photographs. I think he chose to shoot all the images in black and white to connote sinister emotions and show the darkness and anger in everyday life. He also shoots most of his images in landscape. This is so he can focus on different aspects of the image and not an individual.

Homelessness in Russia
This is one of Gillanders most well known projects, highlighting homeless children in Russia.2002. I think he wanted to show how homeless children grew up fast by displaying them fending for themselves and smoking.
